The 10th Annual Surftech Jay Race is Here!

Santa Cruz, CA (June 23, 2011) – With summer in full swing, paddlers have been training hard for what will be one of the most competitive paddle events of the year. On June 25th, Surftech will crown it’s 10th Annual Jay Race champion in Capitola Beach, CA.

As preparation for the Molokai-2-Oahu race next month, eight-time M2O champion Kanesa Duncan Seraphin (Kauai, HI) will travel to California to compete in this Saturday’s race. “The Jay Race will be a great opportunity for me to race against a very competitve field leading up to the Molokai race” said Kanesa. Saturday’s competition will feature a diverse group of competitors. Many athletes who are known for their stand up paddling skills have chosen to race traditional paddleboards. We may be surprised to see just how competitive these normally upright paddlers will be racing in the traditional style!

Athletes to watch for will be four-time Jay Race winner, Gary Fortune (Los Angeles, CA), 2010 Jay Race winner Anthony Vela (Palos Verdes, CA), 2009 winner Craig Waltz (Santa Cruz, CA), 2010 Women’s winner, Maya Sprinsock (Santa Cruz, CA), 2010 Women’s SUP winner, Morgan Hoestery (Honolulu, HI), three-time Battle of the Paddle champ Candice Appleby (San Clemente, CA), 2010 UL SUP winner Tony Meuller (Santa Cruz, CA) and 2010 Stock SUP winner, Mike Vaughan (Santa Monica, CA).

Join ocean athletes from around the country as they glide through the pristine waters of the Monterey Bay for the 10th Annual Surftech Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race presented by Maui Jim. Set a goal, pull the trigger and sign up for the Jay Race to achieve it! If you’re more of a social paddler, no worries! Form a team and enter the Covewater SUP relay! Jim Terrell of Quickblade paddles has come up with a new stand up paddle racing stroke which is causing waves in the SUP racing world. Jime Terrell and Dan Gavare used the new stroke called the Plung stroke to win first and second place in a sprint race at The Olympic Training Center during the Silver Regatta  race in April.

The new stroke technique allowed them to win over racers known to be faster who were using conventional paddle strokes. The new paddle technique is done in the surf stance with one foot forward and a pluge forward to extend the reach of the paddle stroke. The Plunge stroke allows for paddling on one side only and is said to save time which is wasted in crossing over thus keeping the paddle in the water longer. Although the stroke works well for sprints it is unknown how it would fare in more typical longer SUP races.

for more information about this new paddle stroke check out the article on SUP Connect.
