April 26, 2012 (Huntington Beach, CA)

-Victory KoreDry is pleased to announce the Surf Race to Victory SUPCross Series. Each Surf Race to Victory event will test the competitors all around waterman ability, grit and determination. Successful racers must combine paddling and surfing skills on technical courses. The exciting race series has scheduled events at Carlsbad, CA (June 9th), San Clemente, CA (July 21) Weber River, Utah (July 31) and the championship event at Huntington Beach, CA (September 15).

The exciting SUPCross format features competitors sporting helmets, jerseys, and big fast SUP boards. Starting from the sand before a “V” shaped course, SUP racers charge through the surf and round outside buoys twice before catching waves back to the finish. The exciting knockout format is run in heats with top finishing racers advancing into each next round. Non-advancing racers are given a second chance to qualify to the main event through repechage heats.

Inspired by last year’s very popular first time event, Victory Koredry owner/CEO Marc Spitaleri, has committed the brand to a championship series that will offer cash and prizes to local event winners and overall race series point scorers.

“We are excited about the Surf Race to Victory SUPCross Series and expanding our popular format to the growing SUP racing community”. “The series is a great fit for our KoreDry technical garments, which are popular with water athletes everywhere”.

The race series will highlight the technical aspects of SUP racing, as conditions will be major factor in every race. The format is really fun for both competitors and spectators who can watch the races from the beach or pier. Describing last year’s action, elite SUP racer, Brandi Baksic, stated, “the racing was awesome to watch because many elite paddlers were getting worked in the surf. It was definitely the most fun racing event of the season”.

Entrants in the Surf Race to Victory SUPCross Series will gain points at each event towards the overall championship. The final series event will be at Victory KoreDry’s home beach, Huntington Beach, on September 15 and will be worth double points. Racers, fans and media can follow rankings at http://www.victorykd.com/.

There are both men and women OPEN divisions scheduled at all Surf Race to Victory SUPCross Series events. Carlsbad and Huntington Beach events offer age group and kid’s categories.

Last year’s inaugural event featured many top international racers. Anthony Vela (Los Angeles) took the win after a close battle with Australian Jamie Mitchell. In the final, both racers caught the same wave and Vela won the foot race to the finish capturing the $1500 first place prize. Jake Jensen (Australia) finished third, Fernando Stalla (Mexico) finished fourth and famed big wave surfer, Chuck Patterson (Dana Point), captured fifth place. In the women’s division, Candice Appleby (San Clemente) took the win, Brandi Baksic (San Clemente) finished second and Gillian Gibree (San Diego) rounded out the podium in third place

Just like last year, this year’s final awards ceremony will be held at the corner of Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway at the Surfers’ Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach right after the championship event. After the awards, competitors and spectators can unwind enjoying a Hinano fashion show and party at Duke’s restaurant. Last year’s champion, Anthony Vela, commented “I was stoked the whole day, not just to win but to see everyone having such a good time racing in the surf”. “It’s always great to end an event with a party and a cold Hinano beer.”

HONOLULU (May 9, 2012) - One year ago at the Battle of the Paddle Hawaii, Travis Grant (AUS) lined up for his first race under the C4 Waterman label. Beneath his feet was a brand new 12’6 custom race board shaped by Dave Parmenter. In his hands was one of the first prototypes of the C4 X-Wing paddle.

After clinching gold on the same board at the ISA games in Peru in (March), Travis brought it back to Hawaii for the Quiksilver Waikiki Paddle Festival last weekend and ran away with first place in Jamie Mitchell’s own elite “Survivor SUP” Race. Danny Ching second, Mitchell third.

That result capped off a perfect 12-month trifecta of elite race victories that has both the C4 brand and Travis soaring.

“There is something magic about this board and paddle combination, I don’t know what it is exactly but it’s so fast,” said Grant, “and the paddle is like doing 80% of the effort with 100% of the results.”

“Lets not forget that obviously Travis is an amazing athlete” said Todd Bradley, CEO of C4 Waterman. “He deserves a huge amount of recognition. What we’ve done is simply utilize the C4 data bank of SUP and paddling knowledge to providing him with the best tools in the market place.”

C4 Waterman released Travis’ winning board, now called the TGIF Pro Model, in August 2011 at the Outdoor Retailer trade show along with the X-Wing paddle.
HONOLULU – (May 5, 2012)– Australian Travis Grant mastered a brand new stand-up paddle race format today to win the elite “Survivor SUP” race of the Quiksilver Waterman Collection Waikiki Paddle Festival. Grant finished ahead of Danny Ching (Redondo Beach, California), and the designer of today’s course, Jamie Mitchell (Australia), who were second and third respectively. Grant won $2,000 for the result. The women’s division was a clear upset with a win by California’s Gillian Gibree (San Diego) over Hawaii pair Jenny Kalmbach and Candice Appleby respectively. Gibree won $1,500.

Above: Travis Grant (black 87), Jamie Mitchell (center 346), Travis Grant (right in green) were the men to beat. Photo: Bernie Baker.

Jamie Mitchell’s Survivor SUP format was a major hit by both competitor and spectator’s standards. For the men, it featured five elimination rounds on an M-shaped buoy course, followed by an eight-man final. All rounds were raced in the Le Mans style, with just five minutes break inbetween. The ladies’ race consisted of two rounds and a final but was just as hotly contested as the men’s division.

Grant, 29, from Queensland’s Gold Coast, won here for the first time last year racing the “Battle of the Paddle” format and today proved that he is still the man to beat. He paced himself through the rounds, peaking perfectly in the final. Ching held the lead in the final until the outside buoy turn in the wave zone, where Grant made a push, found a small swell and passed him up. With Ching and Mitchell still hot on his heels to the beach, Grant never looked back and gave every stroke his all.

“I couldnt be happier, seriously,” said Grant. “I didn’t know what to expect. Those top 10 were literally the top 10 fastest guys in the world at the moment. It was a stacked final and it’s all about getting a good start. I knew what to do, it was just whether or not I could do it. But I love this sort of tricky water and my board just dropped in on this little bump and I took off.

“There were a lot of tactics. I tried to conserve as much as I could (in the early rounds). I think all the top guys did. But in the end I had the perfect race.”

Ching was satisfied with his result, knowing full well that it could have gone either way between the three of them.

“Those two guys (Grant and Mitchell), and everybody in that final were so fast and so competitive. When you look at it, it’s always a bump here… a buoy turn there… it’s one little mistake. I think with this format you get the opportunity to get some of the nerves out, but it’s still very similar to a long distance paddle – in the end it still hurts.”

The women’s race was equally close but ended in a major upset when Gillian Gibree stole the victory from the two local Hawaii paddlers who were tipped as the favorites: Kalmbach and defending event champion Appleby.

Above: L to R: Gillian Gibree, Candice Appleby, Jenny Kalmbach 200 yards from the finish. Kalmbach surged to move to second. Photo: Bernie Baker.

Gibree, formerly from land-locked Massachusetts, surprised none more than herself. Though she is no stranger to SUP competition, she has never beaten either Appleby or Kalmbach. Regardless, she had them following in her wake today.

“It was amazing, I didn’t expect this at all,” said Gibree. “It was a nice surprise. I love the sprints – they’re so much fun to me, the excitement and the adrenaline. It was a great race. I’ve never beaten Candice or Jenny before. I’m originally from Massachusetts – really cold water, so this is like a dream come true being able to experience this. I grew up in the country. My dad’s a hockey player. When I started learning to do this I got my butt kicked a million times over but I guess I finally learned and I’m loving it. I love everything about the ocean.”

Kalmbach found plenty to be pleased about in finishing ahead of Appleby.

“Every lap, somebody different led and there was a lot of tactics involved,” said Kalmbach. “But it was really fun. I don’t think I’ve beaten Candice in a few years. She’s such a phenomenal athlete, so I’m really stoked about that.”

Other events held today included prone paddleboard racing, open SUP racing, and outrigger canoe sprints.

Coming up tomorrow will be the 10-mile Hawaii Kai to Waikiki downwind distance race for all paddleboard and outriggers classes.Complete listing of results for all events not available at time of writing.
